Stepping Hill Hospital first opened in 1905 and was a military hospital during the first world war. The hospital became part of the NHS upon the formation of the service in 1948.
In 2000, Stockport NHS Trust was formed. In 2004, we became Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, one of the first ten foundation trusts in the country.
In 2012, we were joined by Stockport NHS community services as well as our hospital services, paving the way for a truly integrated service in Stockport.
The hospital site has grown gradually over the years to the larger site of today. In 1972, our new maternity building opened. In 1996, a new hospital wing opened including the new Treehouse children’s unit. More recently an enhanced acute medical unit opened in 2016, and a new emergency and urgent care campus and outpatients services building opening in 2025.
