About our service
The Fertility service at Stepping Hill Hospital is run by a Consultant and Reproductive Health Specialist.
We offer care and support to couples who have been referred by their GP after initial consultation and investigations. Couples are normally seen if they have been trying to conceive for 12 months (this can be 6 months if you are over 36), or you may be seen earlier if your GP feels it necessary.
Your first appointment may be a telephone consultation.
Before your appointment
Please ensure that you have copies of all the results from your GP.
During your appointment
You may be seen by a Nurse Specialist or a Consultant.
You will be asked a lot of questions to build a history of your fertility, which could include some sensitive and in depth questions, this information will be used to develop a comprehensive care plan, and it might be that further investigations will be required, these may be bloods, scans, or other tests to assess your fertility, these are not usually carried out in this initial appointment, additional appointments for these will be arranged.
It is recommended that your partner attends appointments to discuss their fertility heath.
The process can be emotional, so it is important to support each other.
Follow up appointment
A follow up appointment may be made, we will ask you to contact the unit when all of the investigations recommended have been completed to arrange further management and discuss potential treatment options.
We provide induction of ovulation with ultrasound monitoring and some surgical treatment if necessary.
For couples who require assisted conception, we will refer them to the appropriate tertiary centre.
You will be provided with appropriate information leaflets and contact numbers.
